Darren Merlob has been a pioneer and innovator in the swimming pool industry for over 25 years. In 1987, starting with just a few pools on a service route in Florida, Darren grew American Pool Resurfacing to become one of the largest, most profitable pool renovation companies in South Florida.
In 2004, frustrated with traditional crack repair methods (epoxy injection, rebar, etc.), Darren developed a revolutionary technique for repairing structural cracks using a patented compression staple known as Torque Lock. The Torque Lock Staple is used world wide to repair and stabilize cracks in cement, gunite, shotcrete, and concrete. Torque Lock has been patented since 2005 and is currently being sold through approximately 700 distribution locations. In 2005, Torque Lock was a Top 50 Award Winner for most promising product, according to Pool and Spa News. It has also been featured on HGTV Ground Breakers as well as on many news outlets and other trade publications.
In 2007, Darren sold his interest in his Florida business and moved to Austin, TX to start Austech Pools, a company specializing in leak detection and repair. In less than four years, Austech stunned the competition to become the most relied upon leak detection business in the Central Texas area. Due to the rapid success of Austech pools, Darren decided to sell this business in 2011 and launch Caltech Pools in Southern California. Caltech is currently thriving in the swimming pool capital of the world.
While building Austech, Darren became frustrated using traditional leak detection equipment. Traditional equipment was antiquated and unreliable. This problem promoted the development of a new business venture called Leaktronics. Leaktronics equipment is state of the art sonar and video equipment, which finally brings leak detection equipment into the 21st century. Leaktronics has added 4 accessories to its product line within the past 3 years. In 2014, Caltech/Leaktronics received a patent pending for a brand new product that will incorporate both sound and electromagnetic technology for precise leak detection location.
Darren has obtained licenses in Florida, Texas, and California and continues to educate himself and innovate to meet the changing needs of the pool industry, Additional notable achievements include consulting as a structural expert in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 2005. He has also consulted on International pool projects in Spain, Australia, Chile, Puerto Rico, Japan, Grenada, Bahamas, Israel, England, and Ireland. As mentioned earlier, Darren received a patent pending for Torque Lock in 2005 and Caltech/Leaktronics in 2014.
